Sermon Series: 1 PETER: HOPE IN A HOSTILE WORLD

By: PTR NIC SY

Sermon Notes:

1 PETER 4:7-11 NIV

7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.
8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.
10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.
11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

2 PETER 3:9 NIV

9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

PRAY SERIOUSLY

1 PETER 4:7 NIV

7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.

clear minded | Greek: sóphroneó
“to be of sound mind”

self-controlled | Greek: sóphroneó
“to be of sound mind”

“One of the great uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove at the last day that prayerlessness was not from lack of time.”

John Piper

LOVE DEEPLY

1 PETER 4:8-9 NIV

8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

deeply | Greek: ektenés
“stretched, zealous, earnest”

Protecting love

1 PETER 4:8 NIV

8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

PROVERBS 10:12 NIV

12 Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.

MATTHEW 18:15-17 NIV

15 If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.
16 But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’
17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

“When fervent love is found in a fellowship of Christians, many small offenses, and even some large ones, are readily overlooked and forgotten. But where love is lacking, every word is viewed with suspicion, every action is liable to misunderstanding…”

Wayne Grudem

Demonstrating love

1 PETER 4:9 NIV

9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

hospitality | Greek: philoxenos | “loving strangers”

grumbling | Greek: goggusmos | “a muttering, murmuring”

SERVE FAITHFULLY

1 PETER 4:10-11 NIV

10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.
11 If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Every Christian has at least one gift.

Whatever gift you have you should use it to help other people.

Some gifts are noticeable, others are unnoticeable but all of them are helpful.

The reason we share our gifts with other people is to glorify God.

“He has no hands but ours.”

  • What have you done with the gifts God has given you?
  • Who have you helped along the way?
  • Is the church better and stronger because you are here?
  • Are you wasting God’s gift or are you using it for his glory?
