Sermon Notes:

EPHESIANS 2:8-9 NIV

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

MAN’S ROLE IN SALVATION

Repentance is a “turning from” – you are moving away from something.
Faith is a “turning to” – you are moving towards something.

A. Repentance

Repentance is not reformation.
(act of turning over a new leaf by one’s own strength)

Repentance is not remorse.
(act of regretting the fruit of one’s crime but not the root)

Repentance is not penitance.
(act of attempting to make up for one’s sins through good works)

REPENTANCE | Greek metanoia
meta (after) + noeo (understand)
“afterthought” or “change of mind”

TRUE REPENTANCE FIRST INVOLVES THE TURNING FROM ONE SPECIFIC SIN – THE SIN OF REJECTING CHRIST.

JOHN 16:7-9 NIV

7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;

Man’s great sin, which will eventually condemn him forever is the rejection of Jesus Christ.

SECONDLY, REPENTANCE ALSO INVOLVES TURNING FROM SINS.

LUKE 3:8 NIV

8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

1 JOHN 3:9 ESV

9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.

B. Faith

ACTS 20:21 NIV

21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.

The Biblical definition of faith is characterized by the word “trust.”

JAMES 2:19 NIV

19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder.

FAITH & REPENTANCE IS GOD’S GIFT.

1. Faith is a gift.

JOHN 6:47 NIV

47 I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.

JOHN 6:44 NIV

44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.

2. Repentance is a gift.

ACTS 11:18 NIV

18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.”

ACTS 5:31 NIV

31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

2 TIMOTHY 2:25 NIV

25 Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth

GOD’S PROMISED SECURITY OF SALVATION

A. The sovereign decision of the Father.

JOHN 5:24 NIV

24 I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

JOHN 3:16-18 NIV

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

Your eternal life began the moment you trusted Jesus for your salvation.

ROMANS 8:38-39 NIV

38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

B. The high-priestly work of Jesus.

HEBREWS 7:25 NIV

25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

LUKE 22:31-32 NIV

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

1 JOHN 2:1 NIV

1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

Our salvation is not based on our performance but on what Jesus has done for us.

HEBREWS 10:23 NIV

23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

C. The sealing power of the Holy Spirit.

EPHESIANS 1:13-14 NIV

13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.
