Psalm 46 ESV
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth.9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
INTRODUCTION
God was PRESENT yesterday and He will be PRESENT tomorrow, but more importantly He is PRESENT TODAY in whatever circumstance we might be.
I. THE EVER PRESENT GOD IN COSMIC TROUBLES (vv.1-3)
“Strength” meaning our source of power for living.
“Refuge” where one finds rest and asylum.
“Fortress” signifies protection in Him.
Israel’s confession of the ever-present God is a comforting doctrine.
It means that He will also be there for us tomorrow in a MIGHTY WAY no matter what happens.
II. THE EVER PRESENT GOD IN JUDGMENT (vv.4-7)
Nations and kingdoms may cause great alarm and create havoc on earth (v. 6), but they will fall quickly when God speaks His word of judgment.
III. THE EVER PRESENT GOD IN ALL NATIONS ON EARTH (vv.8-11)
The psalmist exhorts the godly to consider the works of God. The recitation of the mighty acts of God plants reminds us of His care, protection and faithfulness toward His people.
The message is clear: BE STILL and KNOW that He is God: our ever-present HELP.
