Sermon Title: THE NOBODY THAT GOD NOTICED

Sermon Text: 1 SAMUEL 16:1-13 (NIV)

Sermon Series: FLIP SIDE: STUDY OF THE LIFE OF DAVID

Sermon Notes:

1 SAMUEL 16:1-13 NIV

1 The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me.” The LORD said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”
4 Samuel did what the LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. T5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
They asked, “Do you come in peace?”
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed stands here before the LORD.”
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the LORD chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The LORD has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered, “but he is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 12 So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.

MAN PANICS, GOD PROVIDES (1 Samuel 16:1-3)

1 SAMUEL 15:10-11 NIV

10 Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel: 11 “I am grieved that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions.” Samuel was troubled, and he cried out to the LORD all that night.

When our lives are changed by the unexpected, nothing of God is changed.

ISAIAH 65:24 NIV

24 Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.

CHOSEN | Hebrew raah
“to see, to look”

We may not know what the future holds but we know who holds the future.

MAN CHOOSES, GOD CORRECTS (1 Samuel 16:4-10)

“Why is it that we can meet these strangers and make deductions on the strength of these meetings, deductions that are often wrong and are often immediately superficial?”

“Talking To Strangers”, Malcolm Gladwell

“The subject of the heart is addressed in the Bible more than any other topic—more than works or service, more than belief or obedience, more than money, and even more than worship.”

John Eldredge

MATTHEW 15:7-9 NIV

7 “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: 8 ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’”

In the end, what others think of you doesn’t matter. What God thinks makes all the difference.

To be a man after God’s heart means that because you know that God never gives up on you, you never give up on God.

MAN NEGLECTS, GOD NOTICES (1 Samuel 16:11-12)

1 SAMUEL 16:17-19 NIV

17 So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.” 18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the LORD is with him.” 19 Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”

When God wants to prepare us for bigger things, he first teaches us to be faithful in little things.

2 CHRONICLES 16:9a NASB

9 For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.
