Sermon Notes:
MARK 7:31-37 ESV
31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis.
32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.
33 And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue.
34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”
35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.
36 And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.
37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
The God who holds the universe… holds your hand.
In God’s economy, there’s no such thing as small people with small problems. There are only people he loves who have problems he wants to solve.
God is big enough to hold the universe, and personal enough to hold your story.
PURPOSEFUL: JESUS TAKES THE LONG WAY
The God who holds the universe… goes out of his way.
In his kingdom, love doesn’t calculate on cost-effectiveness. Grace doesn’t run on efficiency reports.
PERSONAL: JESUS GETS UP CLOSE
Jesus didn’t just want to heal the man. He wanted the man to feel loved.
“sigh”
Greek: stenazó
“to groan, to sigh deeply.”
The God who holds the universe… understands your struggle.
“speech impediment”
Greek: mogilalos
ISAIAH 35:6 ESV
6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert;
PERFECT: JESUS DOES EVERYTHING RIGHT
“well”
Greek: kalós
“rightly, good, right, beautifully, commendably, correctly.”
Are we giving God enough credit for the way he works?
The God who holds the universe… does all things well.
Can you trust that God is doing more than you can see?
“God is never arbitrary. He does nothing without a reason, and his reasons are always rooted in his infinite wisdom and holiness.”
